A friend just posted this sentiment about the tragedy in  Haiti on his Facebook Status.

“up to a hundred thousand people dead in what is already one of the world’s poorest places. If a sentient God exists, he does not care for us…”

It hurts to hear someone say this.  In the wake of what is probably the worst environmental disaster in modern times, I still think that it is a miracle in place so densely populated as Port-au-Prince (over 3 million people) that the death toll is only “up to a hundred thousand”, which is still an estimate based on a statement by their Prime Minister “Hundreds of thousands may have died”.  I think it’s a miracle that their main airport regained function in under 12 hours so that the planes carrying relief from all over the globe can reach these suffering people within the crucial 48 hour rescue time frame.

I don’t know why tragedies like this occur and don’t have an answer that particular friend would accept as comforting.

But I look for comfort in the facts that this tragedy might lead to Haiti finally receiving the attention and the help it needs as one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere.  That once the mourning is over and the rubble can be cleared that Port-au-Prince can rebuild itself with the mission to never again let a tragedy like this happen. I hope that the hearts and of people all over the world are being open to the situation in this country through this tragedy.

I truly hope that the reports that the people of Port-au-Prince are staying calm and united are true and that survivors are continuing to be found.

No matter what you believe in pray for the people of Haiti today and remember that a world in despair is not a world with out hope.

Prayer for the People of Haiti (found on this site.)

For the people of Haiti, “the least of these,” O God we pray.
Your children are in the depths of suffering, without food, homes,
and the most basic forms of security, without hope.
Their land is ravaged and their spirits in despair.
In your mercy, open our eyes to what
is happening and open our hearts so we may respond.
May we grow in solidarity with our sisters and brothers in
Haiti. May they live to see rebuilding and renewal in their land. Amen

A Prayer for Victims of the Earthquake

We mourn the death and destruction in Haiti, O Lord,
And we pray for those who died in this recent disaster.
May their souls rest in peace.
May their families be comforted.

We pray for the living survivors.
Be with them, Lord, in this traumatic time.
May they experience Your healing,
In their spirits as well as their bodies.

We pray for the communities affected.
May they come together in solidarity
To rebuild and to affirm new life
Amid the ancient stones.
