If I was a superhero (and we all know how much I wish this was true) my arch-nemesis would wear the reds and creams of the Dr. Pepper can. As it stands now, my arch-nemesis is simply… the Dr. Pepper Can.
I consider myself to be a person of relatively few vices… at least when it comes to what goes into my body. I’m not an ultra-vegan health nut, but I still manage to have a better diet than the majority of the people in this country and I’m constantly trying to improve that. However I falter at soda. I love soda; have ever since I was a kid and I wish I didn’t.
I kicked the habit once, for the better part of my senior year of high school and lost about 10 lbs just by that; so I know I can do this.
So here’s the plan:
From January 1st through January 11th I’ve gone 4/11 days without a soda. I currently have two days designated specifically as “no-soda” days and then am trying to fit as many other days as I can. My goal is to have at least 200/356 days of this year be soda free. I can have soda on 156 days or 3 soda days a week at most. It might seem like a lot but for someone who likes to pick up a DP on her way to work everyday (6 days a week) it will be a challenge.
Though I’d love to see myself completely rid of the vile beverage my more attainable goal is I can make it so I drink no more than once a week at most.
Anyone have any suggestions for achieving this goal?

Hard habit to break (I know). What I am doing is limiting myself to 12-18 oz of coca cola in the morning. Then that’s it for the rest of the day. I either drink water or iced tea with a little lemon and sugar.
However, I did some calculations and if I could just give up the soda completely, I could loose over 15 lbs this year without doing anything else!

well, one compromise could be switching to Diet DP. I’ve had it before, it’s not too bad.
I like soda too, but as a diabetic, I obviously can’t drink it. But I have a diet coke every day. I know its not the healthiest thing in the world, but, like you, its about my only vice. 🙂

Thanks for the recommendation, but it’s the stuff in the soda in general I would love to be without more than the calories, etc. DP has a few chemical and that lovely high fructose corn syrup that I’d love to get out of my system.

I gave up soda in high school for Lent and never went back. I’ve found that things that seem impossible any other time are soo much easier if I’ve told God that I’m going to sacrifice them for Him, just for these 40 days. It’s like you don’t have the option to cheat. (I never did the exception for Sunday thing.)
Anyway, after I gave up soda for Lent that year I was so excited to have my next Mountain Dew – and I couldn’t even finish it. It actually made me sick to my stomach. After that I figured I was probably better off without soda and did without it for years! I still rarely drink it. I’m a big water fan, but if I need something flavored sometimes I’ll drink that carbonated flavored water. It’ll be important to replace your Dr. Pepper with something less bad.
So perhaps you should keep up your plan for now and then come February/March evaluate and see if you can’t give it up for Lent?

That’s a great idea, I’ve never done a Lenten Fast before, but this would be a great one to do =) I can’t believe I didn’t think of it.
